Nobody puts Baby in a Corner
Lauren is the reason why celebrities look terrible in their mugshots, because she isn’t there to prep them for the camera. In the photo industry, our job is to make people photograph in their best light.(Pun intended). And what I do with light, Lauren does with their hair, complexion and skin. Being a Makeup Artist/Hair Dresser can get very personal, because it seems that their work is so subjective, and I don’t get it, but I know she’s good at it, because the people look great under our lights.
What’s really amazing, is that often times, the people behind the scenes, the stuntmen, the grips, the electricians, the camera assistants, even the PA’s can have just as much an amazing story as the celebrated actors and models we make look beautiful, and more so. Because we know the imperfections of who those celebs are, and work to correct them. People on set are often grounded, and very real people, having that deep understanding that what we do for work is fun, and that’s all it is. Magazines, tabloids, advertising should all be just taken with a grain of salt, because its the best makeup people, its the best cameras, its the best lighting guys, its the best photo retouchers, its the best of the best, and its not ever going to be that good, and real simultaneously. So many of us see behind the curtain, and know the reality of what is the fabrication in the imagination of anyone else who doesn’t work in this.
Lauren and I were on this shoot with some of the guys in the posts coming in next, and it was striking her resemblance to Jennifer Grey aka “Baby” in Dirty Dancing. We had worked a three day job, and this was in the final minutes of it, while we are all packing up. I grabbed the Rollei and shot her against a window. Holding the Rollei in one hand and a lighting instrument in another, I shot this one frame on film.
I believe that true power typically rests behind the throne. Just like behind every great man is a great woman, and every President has power in the Cabinet. Well in our business Real beauty is in the people who can attend to the stars, but be comfortable in their own skin and never be the center of attention, and having that confidence that resonates in beauty automatically. The same can be said of Lauren. All her effort, and all her perfection goes into someone else, and helps them look their brightest, while she stands in the shadows, out of the lights, out of the camera, and is vigilant to every detail that is being photographed. She is the real beauty on set.
