Flipping the Script
You know those perfectionist hardasses? The ones that you can never do anything right? The ones where if you had a chance to work for them or have a root canal you would consider the dentist? The ones where when you sign on to a job and you mutter under your breath, “Really? why did I sign up for this?” Well that’s not what I think of Tom. He is the opposite of that, but originally when I started lighting for these photoshoots, that’s what I previously thought.
See somehow the “toughlove” Tom would give at first was persnickity, narrow, focused, and specific. And it came out as a tad abrasive, and harsh, but overtime, he’s lightened up, not that he has changed, its just I know now what works well for him, and what doesn’t. We have put so much faith in master’s degrees, higher learning and credentials, that we lost so much phasing out the Apprentice and the Master system of vocations. Its when we get beaten up and humbled do we really learn anything. And Tom has beat the snot out of me at times. Resetting a light, resetting a power distribution, resetting the packs, resetting the diffusion, resetting the camera settings, resetting how I packed up a Medium size Elinchrome in the Orange travel bag.
And I’ve learned so much from Tom. Name drop any photographer, any celebrity, chances are he’s lit for them. He is confident, focused, and fast. He is also in High Demand all over town, and I’ll usually pick up his overflow work if he has any for me. But looking at this surf/skate/snow bum, you’d think nothing of it. He isn’t a bum at all, he’s one of the best guys in the business, and I’m proud to call him not only someone I get the honor to work with, but also a friend.
