A Friend of a Friend
You hear stories about this guy in NY and what he did, and how cool he is, and what good people he is, and then the stories fade a bit in your memory because you don’t know the guy. And you don’t remember the combination of people talking about him, and life just simply moves on. Work shows up and they call you, and want you to be apart of the crew for a one day job at the top of Beverly Hills somewhere. And so you go. You go, because the job sounds interesting. Its with “So and So” (Talent) for “So and So” (Magazine) and “So and So” is shooting it and this is his method(light).
“Hmm Sounds Cool, I’m in.”
In the movie, “Heat,” the character Michael Cheritto, played by Sizemore, in a monumental decision to do one last heist even though he is set financially because all the money he has put away in investments, states, “I’m in, for me, the Action is the Juice.” I get that now.
Freelancing has a way of intoxicating you with allowing the freedom to move from job to job, and be equally as creative and proficient. Building quickly upon different techniques, different styles, and come to grips with what people in charge want. You are literally on the edge everyday, staying sharp, where you need to be.
A few years in this, is a lifetimes in 9-6 worlds, and that’s good and bad, but because of the small circles that you travel in of the best guys in the world, you hear stories about other operators like you. Who live in the NYC and work that circuit, and happen to share your name. And did this thing(which is incredible) and respects him for it.
Well on this one particular job in the Hills of Beverly, I ran into him, and it was a sort of..”Wait…you’re the guy?” moment. Working with him, I realized, that he was as my friends in the business stated, a Good guy.
I realize what I do is not as dramatic as robbing a bank, although it can be, but the freelance film and photo industry in general is difficult, you really got to love what you do to not only stay in it, but to exceed at it. And meeting someone you’ve always heard about but never met, and finally meeting on an epic job that fits my criteria of awesome, with an amazing Female talent, in a September issue of all things, makes way for a good experience.
It was honor to meet the other guy named Leo.
