Beauty, Brains, and Knock Knock Jokes
I had the opportunity to take this photograph of Jessica in LA a few weeks ago. You wouldn’t think such a vivacious and hilarious person could be in such an attractive wrapping, but for all those guys out there, she exists!
Originally I met her on a project that I was the cinematographer for, and many of the people I met on that project continue to be in the closest of circles that I move in now. LA seems to have a way of blindsiding you with awesomeness. You will wake up and realize in a few short hours, you are doing something you had no idea you would be doing a few hours ago. Same goes for the people you meet and the projects you work on. And every now and then, the world rotates back around and you run into the same person you last saw 2 years ago.
Knowing who Jessica is, there is so much life and energy in this photograph, and it replicates the sentiment that resounds inside of her. I’ve met a lot of people lately that have conquered the demons, like she has. And we all have them, but dealing with them, and surviving is something else. The stories of people who have overcome adversity rather than sidestepped them with vices, are obviously the triumphant stories movies are made of. But most times the demons don’t die, they linger, they lie dormant, and every waking moment is a choice not to be overcome by them. Looking at this image of her, it so apparent the health, the joy, the playfulness, the lightness of being that exudes from her. She permeates the confidence of being healthy, and to be able to teach it to others who are privy to the same pitfalls she might have had when she was younger.
We can all take inspiration from this. That the monumental things that stand in our way to a road to healing like trolls with an outstretched hands demanding the tributes that it feels it needs, are nothing more than a series of emotional speed bumps. Each successive one at lower and lower intensities. I was fortunate to take this photograph of someone all of you will most likely know by household name in the next few years or so. I’m so honored to know her, and to realize that sometimes the fortuitous surprises in life are can be as beautiful and charismatic as her.
